Restructuring

The Project

During my time in the UK, I was a change program manager for a national restructuring for the Royal Mail known as the Mail Centre Rationalisation Program. This involved the planned closure of hundreds of mail centres, mass retrenchment across the UK, integrating new technology, and streamlining an old, culturally significant system into one adapted for the 21st Century. I worked closely with consultants from Deloitte, which was the implementation partner, as well as various stakeholders such as trade unions, communications, and consultants from around the world like Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Germany.

The Goal

This was a highly emotional, hugely public restructuring for one of the UK’s most emblematic and historic organisations. There was immense pride among staff working for Royal Mail, some of whom had never worked for another employer. Our goal was to implement this change in a culturally informed, legally sound, and sensitive manner that supported the organisation’s staff through the emotional toll and uncertainty of the restructuring. At the same time, we sought to understand which mail centres should be closed, which staff were retrenched or redeployed, and what technology upgrades were needed as part of the business modernisation.

Strategic Insights

With scrutiny from internal Royal Mail staff, the public, and UK press, this project was a massive operation involving a central London team with an extensive Change Agent Network on the ground in different locations.

Primarily based in the London head office, I also travelled across the UK during the project to Manchester, Liverpool, Swindon, Doncaster and locations most people – locals or internationals – have never been within the country.

I ran feedback sessions, workshops, and consultations with different Royal Mail teams, forming part of a core project team with a wide network of Change Agents who were instrumental to the project when it came to gathering information, testing our approach and strategic business decisions, and implementing the program nationally.

Part of my immersion involved spending time at delivery centres and with postal workers on their rounds, understanding their day-to-day operations. I also partnered closely with their HR Business Partner and Employee Relations Specialist to navigate trade unions and comply with the UK’s specific legislation.

As a South African within a diverse change team, we had to factor in the cultural disconnect with home-grown UK citizens and how to engage them differently. This included growing our understanding of what the Royal Mail represented to its staff and the country in terms of heritage, legacy, and history.

This project was a masterclass in adaptability, empathy, and cultural awareness – and how change teams must seek to understand and integrate these factors into our processes to achieve successful, long term outcomes.
